ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The compilation of this training material package has been made possible with the financing support of the ILO-FINNIDA Project on Training and Information for African and Asian Countries on Occupational Safety and Health. IPCS would like to express its gratitude to the Project.

This project operates within the framework of the International Occupational Safety and Health Information Centre (CIS) of the International Labour Office. The CIS has also provided valuable technical and administrative aid in compiling this package.

We would like to thank the Joint Industrial Safety Council of Sweden for granting permission to print and distribute material based on two of its publications:

The Secretariat to the United Nations Committee for Transport of Dangerous Goods has provided materials for relevant sections of the package.

PREFACE

This training material is intended for those who need to widen their general knowledge of chemical safety in the workplace. It could be used by people

A person using this package in a training workshop would benefit if he or she has certain amount of background information in order to understand the world of chemistry, although this is not absolutely essential.

This training material consists of ten independent chapters which cover different areas of managing chemical hazards. The text is designed to be used as background material for sessions and discussions.

Several themes covered by this publication are subject to national legislation which varies from country to country. Legislation is, indeed, the basis on which practical preventive measures can be built. The texts refer to the Conventions and Recommendations of the International Labour Office and to those of the United Nations, as these have been adopted and approved by a large number of countries. Information about local legislation could be covered in the sessions of workshops.

Chemical substances and their properties, tests to assess their effects on people, animals and the environment, and limits of `acceptable' exposure form a complex information collection, too large to be adapted during a workshop. To serve as a basis for such information, this training material includes data bases on chemicals to be used as reference information. These data bases are available on request from ILO and the IPCS secretariat.

This training material may be freely copied, used, adapted or translated for local educational meetings and workshops (with reference to the source). The chapters can be used independently or linked to other sources, depending on the needs. The text can also be requested on a computer diskette to make reuse and modifications easier where a personal computer is available.
