TYPES OF
HAZARD/
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS/
SYMPTOMS
PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames.
Powder, alcohol-resistant foam, water spray, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION Above 99°C explosive vapour/air mixtures may be formed.
Above 99°C use a closed system, ventilation.
In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.

EXPOSURE
STRICT HYGIENE!

INHALATION Burning sensation. Cough. Laboured breathing. Sore throat.
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Refer for medical attention.
SKIN Redness. Pain. Blisters.
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower.
EYES Pain. Blurred vision. Severe deep burns.
Face shield.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
INGESTION Abdominal cramps. Burning sensation. Weakness.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Rest. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable metal containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place (extra personal protection: complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus).
Separated from food and feedstuffs. Cool. Store only if stabilized. Do not store under inert atmosphere (see notes).
Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS LIQUID.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance can polymerize due to heating, initiators, UV light. The substance decomposes on heating producing acrid fumes (acrylic acid, acroleine).

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
TLV: 0.5 ppm; 2.8 mg/m3 (skin) (ACGIH 1991-1992).

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation and through the skin.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air will be reached rather slowly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin, and the respiratory tract. Inhalation of vapour may cause lung oedema (see Notes).

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis. Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization.

DATA

NOTES
The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential. An added stabilizer or inhibitor can influence the toxicological properties of this substance, consult an expert. The effectiveness of phenolic inhibitors is dependent on the presence of oxygen. Store under air rather than inert atmosphere. Do NOT take working clothes home. The recommendations on this Card also apply to 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate.
