TYPES OF
HAZARD/
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS/
SYMPTOMS
PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Not combustible but enhances combustion of other substances. Many reactions may cause fire or explosion. Heating will cause rise in pressure with risk of bursting.
NO contact with flammable substances. NO contact with aqueous ammonia, metals, oxidants, reducing agents and combustibles.
In case of fire in the surroundings: all extinguishing agents allowed. Fire fighters should wear complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus.
EXPLOSION Risk of fire and explosion on contact with combustible substances, reducing agents, oxidants, metals amd aqueous ammonia.

In case of fire: keep cylinder cool by spraying with water. Fire fighters should wear complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus.

EXPOSURE
PREVENT GENERATION OF MISTS! AVOID ALL CONTACT!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
INHALATION Corrosive. Burning sensation. Cough. Dizziness. Headache. Laboured breathing. Sore throat.
Closed system and ventilation.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Refer for medical attention.
SKIN Corrosive. Redness. Skin burns. Pain.
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
First rinse with plenty of water, then remove contaminated clothes and rinse again. Refer for medical attention.
EYES Corrosive. Redness. Pain. Severe deep burns.
Safety goggles, face shield, or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
INGESTION Corrosive. Abdominal cramps. Burning sensation. Sore throat. Collapse (further see Inhalation).
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Give nothing to drink. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Evacuate danger area! Consult an expert! Ventilation. Contain with inert material. Absorb remaining liquid in dry sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. Do NOT absorb in saw-dust or other combustible absorbents; avoid contact with metal implements (extra personal protection: complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus).
Separated from combustible and reducing substances, oxidants, metals, organics, and food and feedstuffs. Cool. Dry. Well closed. Keep in a well-ventilated room.
Special material. Unbreakable packaging; put breakable packaging into closed unbreakable container. Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
FUMING RED TO BROWN LIQUID , WITH PUNGENT ODOUR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:
The vapour is heavier than air.

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
Upon heating, toxic fumes are formed. The substance is a strong oxidant and reacts violently with combustible and reducing materials. Reacts violently with aqueous ammonia, oxidants, metals, organic compounds and phosphorus causing fire and explosion hazard. Attacks some forms of plastic, rubber and coatings.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
TLV: 0.1 ppm; 0.66 mg/m3 (as TWA) (ACGIH 1993-1994).
TLV (as STEL): 0.3 ppm; 2.0 mg/m3 (ACGIH 1992-1993).

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached very quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
Corrosive. The vapour is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Inhalation of the vapour may cause lung oedema (see Notes). The substance may cause effects on the central nervous system , resulting in impaired functions. Exposure at high levels may result in death. Medical observation is indicated.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis.

ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

NOTES
The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential. Immediate administration of an appropriate spray, by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered.
