TYPES OF
HAZARD/
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS/
SYMPTOMS
PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Not combustible. Liquid formulations containing organic solvents may be flammable. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.

In case of fire in the surroundings: all extinguishing agents allowed.
EXPLOSION The explosion hazard will depend on the solvent used in the formulation.

EXPOSURE
AVOID ALL CONTACT! AVOID EXPOSURE OF ADOLESCENTS AND CHILDREN!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
INHALATION Convulsions. Dizziness. Laboured breathing. Nausea. Unconsciousness. Vomiting. Pupillary constriction, muscle cramp, excessive salivation. Wheezing.
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.
SKIN MAY BE ABSORBED! Redness. Burning sensation. (Further see Inhalation).
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap. Refer for medical attention.
EYES Redness. Pain. Blurred vision.
Face shield, or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
INGESTION Abdominal cramps. Diarrhoea. Laboured breathing. Nausea. Vomiting. Blurred vision.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Induce vomiting (ONLY IN CONSCIOUS PERSONS!). Rest. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. Do NOT wash away into sewer. (extra personal protection: complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus).
Separated from food and feedstuffs. Dry. Keep in the dark. Keep in a well-ventilated room.
Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
YELLOW LIQUID WITH SLIGHTLY PUNGENT ODOUR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating or on burning producing toxic and corrosive fumes including hydrogen chloride, hydrogen bromide, phosphorous oxides. Attacks metal, plastic, rubber and coatings. It is hydrolysed by water and alkalies and degraded by sunlight.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
TLV: ppm; 3 mg/m3 (skin) (ACGIH 1991-1992).

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol, through the skin, by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
Evaporation at 20°C is negligible; a nuisance-causing concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly when dispersed, especially, if powdered.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance irritates the eyes, the skin, the respiratory tract. The substance may cause effects on the nervous system , resulting in convulsions, respiratory failure. Cholinesterase inhibitor. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis. Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization. Cholinesterase inhibitor; cumulative effect is possible: see acute hazards/symptoms.
PHYSICAL
PROPERTIES
Boiling point: 110°C at 66 Pa°C
Melting point: 26.5-27.5°C
Relative density (water = 1): 1.96 at 25°C
Solubility in water: None
Vapour pressure, Pa at 20°C: 0.26
Octanol/water partition coefficient as log Pow: 1.38
ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA
This substance may be hazardous to the environment; special attention should be given to fish.
NOTES
The compound has been obtained in colourless crystalline form. Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is indicated. Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available. Carrier solvents used in commercial formulations may change physical and toxicological properties. Do NOT take working clothes home. Bromex, Dibrom and Orthodibrom are trade names.
