Variations on the theme: The examples of Mexico, Bangladesh and China
There are a number of variations on the theme of export processing zones as a foreign direct investment-led development strategy. Some of these can be illustrated through a brief examination of the "twin-plant" arrangements known as maquiladoras in Mexico, the bonded warehouse system used by the export garment industry in Bangladesh and the special economic zones of China.
