TYPES OF
HAZARD/
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS/
SYMPTOMS
PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames.
Powder, alcohol-resistant foam, water spray, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION Above 85°C explosive vapour/air mixtures may be formed.
Above 85°C use a closed system, ventilation.

EXPOSURE
PREVENT GENERATION OF MISTS!

INHALATION Cough. Headache. Shortness of breath. Sore throat. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes).
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Refer for medical attention.
SKIN Redness. Pain.
Protective gloves (see Notes).
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower. Refer for medical attention.
EYES Redness. Pain. Severe deep burns.
Safety goggles or face shield.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
INGESTION Abdominal cramps. Burning sensation.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Collect leaking liquid in sealable containers. Cautiously neutralize spilled liquid. Then wash away with plenty of water (extra personal protection: A/P2 filter respirator for organic vapour and harmful dust).
Separated from strong oxidants, strong acids, aluminium, food and feedstuffs. Dry. Ventilation along the floor.
Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS, HYGROSCOPIC AND VISCOUS LIQUID , WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating and on burning producing toxic and irritating gases including nitrogen oxides. The substance is a medium strong base. Reacts with cellulose nitrate, causing fire and explosion hazard. Reacts violently with strong oxidants and strong acids. Attacks copper, aluminium and their alloys and rubber.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
TLV: 3 ppm; 7.5 mg/m3; STEL: 6 ppm, 15 mg/m3 (ACGIH 1993).

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation and through the skin.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air will be reached rather slowly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C; on spraying or dispersing, however, much faster.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance irritates the skin and is corrosive to the eyes. The vapour irritates the respiratory tract. Inhalation of the substance may cause asthmatic reactions (see Notes). The substance may cause effects on the central nervous system. Exposure could cause lowering of consciousness.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis and ulceration. Lungs may be affected by repeated or prolonged exposure to the vapour. The substance may have effects on the central nervous system, kidneys, liver, and blood , resulting in asthenia and hematological changes and tissue lesions.

ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

N O T E S
Do not use rubber gloves for handling. Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is indicated. The symptoms of asthma often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential. Anyone who has shown symptoms of asthma due to this substance should avoid all further contact with this substance. The odour warning when the exposure limit value is exceeded is insufficient.
