TYPES OF
HAZARD/
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS/
SYMPTOMS
PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Not combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.

In case of fire in the surroundings: all extinguishing agents allowed.
EXPLOSION

EXPOSURE
PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST! STRICT HYGIENE!

INHALATION
Local exhaust or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest.
SKIN
Protective gloves.

EYES
Safety spectacles.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
INGESTION
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Sweep spilled substance into containers; if appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Carefully collect remainder, then remove to safe place (extra personal protection: P3 filter respirator for toxic particles).
Separated from strong oxidants, aluminium, sodium, food and feedstuffs.
Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
RED TO REDDISH-YELLOW CRYSTALS (see Notes).

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
Reacts violently with strong oxidants, aluminium powder and sodium. Upon heating, toxic fumes of lead compounds are formed.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
TLV (as Pb): ppm; 0.15 mg/m3 as TWA (ACGIH 1992-1993).

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
Evaporation at 20°C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly on spraying or when dispersed, especially if powdered.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
The substance may have effects on the central nervous system, kidneys and blood , resulting in anaemia and impaired functions. Does cause serious reproductive toxicity in humans.
PHYSICAL
PROPERTIES
Melting point: 888°C
Relative density (water = 1): 9.5
Solubility in water, g/100 ml: none
ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

N O T E S
The substance exists in two forms: at ordinary temperatures red to reddish-yellow crystals and yellow crystals stable above 489°C. Litharge, massicot are other names of lead(II) oxide. Also consult ICSC # 0052 (Lead).
