TYPES OF
HAZARD/
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS/
SYMPTOMS
PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames.
Powder, water spray, foam, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION

EXPOSURE
STRICT HYGIENE!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
INHALATION Cough. Laboured breathing. Shortness of breath. Sore throat. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes).
Local exhaust or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration if indicated. Refer for medical attention.
SKIN
Protective gloves.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower.
EYES Redness. Pain.
Safety spectacles, or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
INGESTION
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Sweep spilled substance into containers; if appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Carefully collect remainder, then remove to safe place. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment (extra personal protection: P3 filter respirator for toxic particles).
Separated from strong oxidants. Keep in a well-ventilated room.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
WHITE TO YELLOW CRYSTALS OR POWDER , WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating and on burning producing toxic and corrosive fumes. Reacts with oxidants.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
TLV not established.

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol, through the skin and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air will be reached rather slowly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance irritates the eyes and the respiratory tract. Inhalation of the aerosol may cause lung oedema (see Notes). Medical observation is indicated.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
The substance may have effects on the liver, kidneys, nasal passage and thyroid gland , resulting in impaired functions or tissue lesions.
PHYSICAL
PROPERTIES
Boiling point: 208°C
Melting point: 63°C
Solubility in water: none
Vapour pressure, kPa at 78°C: 1.33
Relative density of the vapour/air-mixture at 20°C (air = 1): 1.0
Flash point: 107°C
Octanol/water partition coefficient as log Pow: 4.15
ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA
This substance may be hazardous to the environment; special attention should be given to fish. In the food chain important to humans, bioaccumulation takes place, specifically in aquatic organisms.
N O T E S
Toxicology is based on 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene. The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential. Immediate administration of an appropriate spray, by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered.
