TYPES OF
HAZARD/
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS/
SYMPTOMS
PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Flammable.
NO open flames, NO sparks, and NO smoking.
Powder, AFFF, foam, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION Above 48°C explosive vapour/air mixtures may be formed.
Above 48°C use a closed system, ventilation, and explosion-proof electrical equipment.
In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.

EXPOSURE
AVOID ALL CONTACT!

INHALATION Burning sensation. Drowsiness. Dullness. Headache. Nausea. Shortness of breath. Vomiting.
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Artificial respiration if indicated. Refer for medical attention.
SKIN MAY BE ABSORBED! Dry skin. Redness. Pain. Blisters.
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap. Refer for medical attention.
EYES Redness. Pain. Blurred vision. Severe deep burns.
Safety goggles, or face shield.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
INGESTION Burning sensation. Drowsiness. Dullness. Headache. Nausea. Vomiting.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Give plenty of water to drink. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Ventilation. Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable containers as far as possible. Wash away remainder with plenty of water (extra personal protection: self-contained breathing apparatus).
Fireproof. Separated from strong oxidants, strong bases, strong acids. Cool. Keep in the dark.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS LIQUID , WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance can presumably form explosive peroxides. The substance may polymerize readily. The substance decomposes on burning producing toxic gases. Reacts violently with strong oxidants, acids and bases.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
TLV: 5 ppm; 23 mg/m3 (as TWA); 10 ppm; 47 mg/m3 (as STEL) (skin) (ACGIH 1995-1996).

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation and through the skin, and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached rather quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
Corrosive. The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Inhalation of the vapour may cause lung oedema (see Notes). Acute exposure may cause central nervous system depression. Exposure could cause lowering of consciousness. Medical observation is indicated.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis. Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization. May cause genetic damage in humans. Does cause serious reproductive toxicity in humans.

ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

N O T E S
Auto-ignition temperature is unknown in literature. Explosive limits are unknown in literature, although the substance is combustible and has a flash point 55°C. Use of alcoholic beverages enhances the harmful effect. Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is indicated. The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential. The odour warning when the exposure limit value is exceeded is insufficient. Check for peroxides prior to distillation; eliminate if found.
